The name of theese Islands should have given me an idea about the weather here.
Yesterday I came to Tarbert, rolled my bike off the ferry, and started to search for a b&b. It was around 8-9 o'clock pm. I tried 5 places, all where fully booked.
This is when I made a bad decission. I thought "-well I have a tent, maby there are more places up the road and actually..it is a bright summer night and even if I need to cycle all night to get up to Stornoway, there's no crisis. I left town, and the wind turned up a notch or two. I tried one more place on the outskirts og Tarbart...fully booked there too...
So; I cycled on. And the wind increased even more..good thing I had tail wind!
I went off the road and looked at a couple of tent-spots..but now the wind was getting a bit too strong for my small light-weight tent. I have to find a place with shelter I thought, and continued.
10-15 kilometers outside Tarbart there was a sign to a Youth Hostel, down a small gravel road, indicating it was 6 K's to the place. At the crossroad there was also a bus shelter. So I got off the bike, got into the shelter and phoned my cousin Gull: "Can you find the number for the YH in Oigadail on the Hebrids". I didn't want to go down the road just to find out the place was closed, or had no vacancies.
She tried Google, the pages for the international YH organisation, the yellow pages of Scotland; no luck.
So after 20 mins or so we gave up, and I decided to cycle on. Since the wind was comming from behind, going back to Tarbart was not a tempting option. On flat ground I made 30 km/h, without pedalling.. I was afraid that I would blow off the road, or onto passing cars.
About 25 K's outside Tarbart I found this sign. The picture is taken this morning, after a good nights sleep, a great breakfast and enjoying great hospitality.
Irene's B&b by Loch Seaforth saved me. I knocked the door, asked politely if they had a room and she said "-yes we do; you must be soaked!"
So while I showered she made me tea and a sandwich, I told her what I wanted for breakfast and I went happily to bed.
Today I have more or less sailed on my bike north to Stornoway. Short trip, only 38 K's. And very little effort.
And what have I done the days before this? I had 2 days in Edinburgh with my friends Aslaug and Mona, with good pub food, nice travel company, world cup matches on pubs, and walking around Edinburgh town. Then I took the train to Slean Bridge near Fort William, and first cycled ....then pushed and carried my bike over the hills, through Arnisdale to Corran.
I had a good nights sleep in Glenelg, took a small ferry to the Isle of Skye, crossed Skye in a day and took the ferry from Uig to Tarbart.
And now? I am not really shure. Maby I go back to mainland Scotland tomorrow, and head for the mountains. Or maby I have gotten addicted to Scottish Isles, so I'll have to and head for the Orkneys. Read here and you'll see!
